Tab Hunter Dies

Tab Hunter Born Arthur Andrew Kelm (July 11, 1931-July 8, 2018) has died 3 days shy of his 87th Birthday. His official Facebook Page posted the news but no cause of death was given.


Career

Tab was a popular actor in the 1950’s and 1960’s he was under contract with Warner Bros. studios. His agent was the Infamous Henry Willson who repped such Stars as Guy Madison, Robert Wagner, Rock Hudson, and Troy Donahue. Henry was gay and many of his actors he managed were also closeted gay. In 1955 Confidential Magazine was going to publish a story about Rock Hudson’s sexual orientation. Henry Willson struck a deal with the Magazine to sell out two of his less famous stars they published a story about Rory Calhoun’s Prison Record and Tab Hunter’s arrest at a gay party in Hollywood for disorderly conduct. The two stories didn’t effect either stars careers. 

When Tab Hunter’s Song “Young Love” went to number one knocking Elvis off the charts Jack Warner Hit the roof because he didn’t profit from the record. Tab said Mr. Warner you don’t have a recording studio. Jack Warner started Warner Bros. Records after that. 

After Tab left Warner Bros. He did Movies with John Waters, He did Dinner Theater but he was happy to let his acting career go and retire from public life. In 2015 he and his partner produced a documentary on his life Tab Hunter Confidential available to watch on Netflix. 

Personal Life

Tab was Born to Parents Gertrude Gelien and Charles Kelm Tab’s Father was abusive and left the family and moved to NYC. Tab’s mother went back to her Maiden name and changed her children’s last names to Gelien after the divorce. Tab ad his brother didn’t have any contact with their father for the rest of their lives. When Tab moved to Hollywood his agent decided to change his name he first wanted to change it to Troy Donahue but Tab didn’t like the name. He agreed to Tab Hunter with Willson. 

Tab had sexual relationships with Figure Skater Robbie Robertson and Actor Anthony Perkins. Tab had a 30+ year relationship with Movie and TV Producer Allan Glaser that lasted until Tab’s death.
